09/22/2009

Along with the Roads Authority of Namibia and the Association of Southern African National Roads Agencies, GRSP co-hosted the 4th African Transportation Technology Transfer Conference in Windhoek, Namibia, Aug. 31-Sept. 4. GRSP representatives facilitated a course on "Road Safety Measures for Vulnerable Road Users," which emphasized low-cost countermeasures that make a maximum impact on road safety.

The Vulnerable Road User Course addressed a comprehensive agenda of topics including; defining and categorising vulnerable road users; speed management and vulnerable road users (traffic calming); infrastructure design aimed at channelling and separating pedestrians; pedestrian visibility and public awareness; and education programmes aimed at vulnerable road users.

The course, which was attended by representatives of several African countries, including Malawi, South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria and Zambia, demonstrated the potential of the global Transport Knowledge Partnership (gTKP) as an invaluable resource for authoritatively addressing the range of issues under consideration.

The United States Department of Transport, the US Federal Transit Association and the Federal Highway Administration also supported the event.
