Telematics improve safety

07/02/2010

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) -  a combination of information technology and telecommunications, can improve safety. Driving for Better Business partner The Fleet Safety Forum,  is calling on fleets to ensure they’re doing all they can to monitor their drivers and vehicles, by considering the use of vehicle tracking technology or telematics.

It is providing a poster and e-guidance campaign pack,  to alert drivers and managers to the benefits of telematics systems to manage risk and improve safety.

Vehicle tracking technology is of growing importance for fleet safety. One recent survey suggests that market penetration of such systems doubled from 2009, with more than half of fleets questioned indicating that they now use the technology.

A number of Driving for Better Business champions already make extensive use of telematic technology, including Tesco.com which has seen a 10% fuel saving and significant increases in driver safety in some stores. DfBB partner The Fleet Support Group is also an advocate of the benefits of telematics to improve safety.

The RoadSafe campaign will be holding a seminar later in the Autumn promoting telematic technology.
