Casualty Reduction - Target Setting
23.07.2010
The UN General Assembly has proclaimed the period 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety, with a goal to stabilize and then reduce the forecast level of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at the national, regional and global levels. gTKP was able to support an UNDA project which helped to promote and reinforce the principle of target setting as a road safety tool.
The full report is available in the gTKP knowledge centre. It shows that although there has been some progress, there is still much work to do. In Africa for example target setting is being considered or had already taken place in few countries, a relatively very small number of countries (13/54) currently use empirically derived targets.
